Winter Wildlife: Ice Age Earth

Join us as we step back in time to see the changing climate of East Anglia over the years, in fact, over the millenia. That’s right, we are going back into the Pleistocene, sometimes referred to as the Ice Age (but I’m sure you all know that 1. the temperatures went up and down during this time, it wasn’t always cold; and 2. there have been other times in Earth’s history when it was blanketed in snow and ice.) To link to the wildlife from our windows today, we’ll be exploring the impact climate change is having on our winter wildlife.

We are celebrating Winter Wildlife this year with a livestream from 7pm on Monday 24 November, when Pleistocene expert Dr Richard Preece will be on hand to answer your questions, and a day of family friendly drop-in activities on Saturday 29 November from 10.00am-4.30pm.

Winter Wildlife Livestream

Winter Wildlife Family Day

Saturday 29 November, 10am – 4.30pm

Join us in the Museum for free, fun, hands-on activities and trails all about Winter Wildlife past and present.

See the beautiful starling murmuration installation created by pupils of King’s Hedge’s Primary School and Grove Primary School with artist Lizzie Ault.

Make your own printed festive cards and try your hand at pressure prints with artist and printmaker Lizzie Ault in the learning lab. These are drop-in activities taking place all day, so do come in and have a go!

Explore the Ice Ages and handle a real mammoth tooth with games and activities in the galleries. Find out about how climate change today is impacting our local wildlife, particular the migration of birds to and from the UK. Take a trail of UK winter wildlife around the Museum’s upper gallery.

Pick up top tips on how to have a more sustainable festive season, and make a small pledge for the planet, easy things we can all do to help wildlife at home and further afield.

We look forward welcoming you all to the Museum!

Cold Adaptations

Want to learn about how animals have adapted to living in the cold? Check out our nature classroom looking at life in the freezer. We also have a nature classroom all about the changing seasons.

Cliamte Change: The Board Game

Want to see if you can survive changing climates? Post-doctoral researcher Dr Michela Leonardi created this climate change boardgame that you can download and play, inspired by her work exploring the changing wildlife through the Pleistocene.
